Algal’s Innovation Box Program embraces one of our core values and commitment to Innovation. In this program, we provide a space for all of our team members to actively participate in the growth, development, and innovation of Algal Engineering.
The Innovation Box Program is open for all suggestions, ranging from small, office-based, or internal changes, to suggestions about new technologies, opportunities or methods that can be implemented in our services for clients.
This program has successfully been used to introduce a variety of changes in the office. These changes have ranged from remodeling some rooms in the office to the use of new software to model site conditions, implementation of new progress management systems and various continuous professional development presentations for new products that can be implemented into our designs.
The innovation program is an important way for the entire team to work together and pursue innovation. By being part of the team, you too can be an integral part of innovation both in our company and, especially, in our industry.
Nuclear Engineering
Algal Engineering has been involved extensively with the Power Generation Sector with projects all around Ontario. Algal's experience with Power Generation creates opportunities for all engineers looking to work in the power generation sector in several domains. These include Nuclear, Hydro, Wind, and Solar power generation.
Algal has been involved in various initiatives and developments in the Nuclear Power Sector. The Nuclear energy sector is undergoing major developments. Algal is staying at the forefront of the energy sector’s reimagining, as the interest in nuclear energy as a replacement for more polluting and emitting fossil fuel energy production.
Algal has been involved in various Ontario Power Generation (OPG) developments, including the refurbishment of existing Nuclear Power Plants and the implementation of the New Nuclear Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project.
As the industry shifts, Algal continues to be involved in these major changes and seeks to continue and further our relationship with OPG with regards to Nuclear Energy and Power Generation as a whole.

Algal Engineering’s goal for all our students is to involve and expose students to the company culture and engineering practices. We value our students and strive to integrate them into the business environment and participate in delivering high quality services to our clients. By involving students in the various facets of the business and guiding them through the supervision of our team members, students may be involved in anything from assistance with design, site visitation (where applicable), supporting engineers, and familiarizing and participating in our QA processes.
Algal Engineering treats its students as future engineers, integral to the growth of our company, and we want our students to have hands-on experience in all sides of our business. We believe that practical experience is a fundamental element in students’ growth into capable engineers.
Our rotation program allows students to experience all aspects of the engineering services we provide. Each Rotation - Building Services, Power Systems, and Nuclear - exposes students to a different aspect of our company and the fields available to them in their career. In these rotations, students will be exposed to a variety of different tasks and experiences and can discover which department they find most interest in personally.
Students will have a variety of assignments including, but not limited to, electrical design and schematics, drafting reports, site visit assistance, testing and existing system analysis, as well as attending client meetings. In including students in a variety of experiences, Algal Engineering helps students both hone their skills and give a glimpse into the larger range of experiences that our business has to offer.
Algal Engineering has long been committed to providing Co-op opportunities to university students as well as other student internships outside of university administrated co-op placements. Algal strongly values continuous employment opportunities for our student team members and has provided recurring internship and co-op terms to students who excel and would like to return to Algal.
Algal sees our co-op and general student program as a way to grow our team and provide opportunities for new engineers. We see the student program as a continuous program all the way into employment. Algal does not see students as a one-time deal, but rather sees recurring terms and employment after university as an integral part of our student program.
